Is Crown Royal Whiskey Gluten-Free?

glutenfreechart5 Gluten-Free Confidence Score: 5/10

There is not a perfect answer to this question. Distillation is technically supposed to remove gluten proteins from the grains used to create Crown Royal whiskey, and most conventional wisdom agrees with this stance. Crown Royal states their whiskey is gluten-free, but we advise caution in drinking Crown Royal if you are new to the gluten-free lifestyle. If you want to play it safe, choose potato vodka, rum, or tequila instead. Please read the ingredient and nutrition label carefully. Need help in understanding what to look for on those labels? We have a guide - check it out!

After distillation any and all spirits are certainly gluten free. SPOILER ALERT!! Following distillation many whiskey’s reintroduce predistilled ingredients during the aging and mellowing process. These may include barley malt from the predistilled mash in scotch, rye or wheat in rye or straight whiskey, etc. Unless the manufacturer regularly tests his finished product for gluten, no whiskey can be assumed gluten free. Contact the manufacturer for specific details before indulging. Rest easy though, fellow celiacs. There is still Rum, Brandy, Tequila, Apple Jack, most gin, Vodka, almost all wine, hard cider, and sorghum beer and ale available to enjoy. Straight vodka is generally double or triple distilled and has no post distilled additives other than water.

If Crown Royal states theirs is gluten free, my guess is it is! I drink it, and it never gives me a problem! Also…not all hard ciders are gluten free!! SPOILER ALERT! 😊
