glutenfreechart6 Gluten-Free Confidence Score: 6/10

Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon is generally considered gluten-free and Kraft has a strict policy that they will disclose any gluten ingredients. However, one of our readers contacted Kraft (see comments section below) and was told that they can’t guarantee that their flavorings are gluten-free. We now have several reader who have left a comment saying that Oscar Meyer Turkey Bacon has caused a reaction. Please  approach this product with care if you are highly sensitive to gluten.

Oscayer Mayer Turkey bacon is NOT Gluten-Free – it contains Autolyzed Yeast Extracts, which is a source of hidden gluten. http://www.livestrong.com/article/71755-autolyzed-yeast-extract/

Thanks for the comment. We would slightly disagree in that autolyzed yeast extract does not necessarily contain gluten (but it definitely could). If it is made from barley it would contain gluten, but it is really difficult to figure that out since in the US that is not required to be called out on the label. Regardless, we have updated this article based on your comment. Thank you!!

I totally agree.. I too got sick.. I shouldn’t had assumed it wasn’t gluten free abut I did. I started eating it for a week as of yesterday and I’ve been extremely sick. I have celiac disease. My stomach feels like I got hit by a bus..

I actually just called Oscar Meyer about the Turkey Bacon because I did eat some last night and ended up with stomach cramps. Not sure if it was bacon or not. They said this product cannot be guaranteed gluten free. The autolyzed yeast is considered gluten free from their supplier, but they said the flavorings a spices are purchased from an outside vendor and could have possible traces of gluten. There would be no wheat for sure because that is required to label by law, but the other sources of gluten could be hidden in their flavoring and spices, which is why they don’t put the gluten free label on this product.

I just started a gluten free diet. The results were over night with me. I was going towards feeling wonderful on my third day. I ate five pieces last night of the Turkey bacon. I woke up feeling like crap and back to my normal crappy feeling. Id say there is gluten in the product. Dont eat it.

I too just cut out gluten about 2 months ago as challenging health concerns forced the issue. I immediately (duh) started to feel better, have less symptoms, and now have a very clear reaction – bloating & gas-type pain being the first. I had both of these symptoms very clearly the 2nd time I had OM turkey bacon. The first time I had less, and had eaten more earlier in the day. This past time I had a much larger serving and within 20 minutes had those first two symptoms, which lead to anxiety and other challenges for the next two days. Bummer. Thanks everyone for your posts and responses. Super helpful.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yet another negative experience with this product…

Yes, me too. I have been gluten free for two years when I was diagnosed as celiac. I have to remember never to eat any processed food since things are always lurking therein. I too felt awful the last three days after having turkey bacon for breakfast. I wondered about the yeast extract. Ah ha! This list suggests I am not alone.
